Dos and Don’ts for using the washing machine and dryers

They are the Way of Using Your Manner without Saying Something

Washing machines :

  • Check the machines : before loading, check the inside of the drum for leftover item
  • Check the pockets of your clothes : ensure your pockets are emptied and no pens, screws, credit card are let inside
  • Fill appropriately : only fill machine ¾ full, clothes need room to move around in water to get clean and proper rinsed and spun
  • Set a timer : track your wash cycle and return promptly to empty the machine for the next customer. A normal wah cycle takes 18-24 min.
  • Choose the correct size of washing machine : do not use the bigger machine for a small load
  • Choose the right amount of detergent :
    • Ensure to use the recommended dose of detergent- resist the urge to add extra detergent, too much causes excess that will not rinse out and can trap bacteria and odour
    • Ensure to use the right compartment for the detergent, see the label on the machine- no powder in the liquid compartment as it will clump; washing pods directly in the drum (will not dissolve when put in compartments)

Dryers :

  • Check if the drum is empty and no items are left in the drum such as pen, coins, screws etc.
  • Only fill the dryer ¾ as air needs to circulate to ensure clothes are dried completely
  • Chose the right temperature - some garments may shrink when high temperatures is used
  • Set a timer : be back in time to empathetic dryer for the next customer
  • Door: you can always open the door to check if your clothes are dry, no need to wait until the cycle is done

They are No-go’s and Straight-up No Cool When Using the Laundromat

Washing machines :

  • Do not overload : leave room in the machine so water can move freely, do not squeeze big blankets in a small machine- laundry would not be washed and rinsed properly
  • Avoid filling up a large machine with small load of laundry - leave the bigger machines for bigger loads or bigger items
  • Do not leave your laundry unattended : ensure to be back in time to unload the machine for the next customer. Laundry left in the machine more than 30 min can be taken out by the next customer. If basket is available laundry will be left in it otherwise will be placed on top of the machine
  • Do not over soap : using to much soap / or softener can result in not getting rinse properly with one washing cycle and / or in shutting down the washing machine and machine needs to rest
  • Do not wash prohibited items :
    • No heavy muddled / soiled items
    • No pet beds / blankets
    • No shoes
    • Oil- strained

Dryers :

  • Do not overload : only fill ¾ to ensure enough air circulation, if unsure or big load of clothes use two dryer. You will save money and time as a dryer which is too full needs to run longer or clothes will not dry fully and equal
  • Do not leave your laundry unattended : ensure to be back in time to unload the machine for the next customer. Laundry left in the machine more than 30 min can be taken out by the next customer. If basket is available laundry will be left in it otherwise will be placed on the table

  • Do not overload the washing machine / dryer
  • Use recommended dose of detergent 
  • Do not leave your laundry sitting in the washer / dryer
  • Wait a few minutes before respectfully removing someone else’s laundry

Do not stare

Avoid looking closely what others customer are washing/ drying and folding, as a public laundromat is a private chore done in a shared space

Keep noise down 

Use headphones for phone calls, music, or videos rather than playing it out loud
